Be the Help: Ensuring Employee Success
by Paul J. Angelle, Jr., J.D.
In my experience, I’ve realized that the traditional view of employees as “the help” is outdated and counterproductive. I get it. I do, but times have changed… and no one wants to follow the dinosaurs into extinction.
In today’s dynamic work environment, it’s crucial to flip this perspective and see ourselves as “the help” for our employees. Doing so fosters a culture of mutual support and success.
This shift in mindset is essential, and we would be well served to learn how to implement it effectively.
FACT: Ensuring employee success is the owner’s responsibility.
When you must terminate or let one of your employees go, regardless of why, you, as the owner, are at fault.
No one enjoys firing an employee [unless they are a psychopath], but awareness of that reality can help change your lens and, ultimately, improve your team.
If you still are unclear as to why this shift is in your best interest, here are four reasons:
1. Empowerment Leads to Engagement
Employees who feel supported and valued are likelier to be engaged and motivated.
This empowerment translates into higher productivity and a more positive work environment.
As leaders, we provide the tools, resources, and encouragement they need to thrive.
2. Building Trust and Loyalty
By positioning ourselves as the help, we build trust and loyalty within our team.
Employees who know their leaders are invested in their success are more likely to stay with the firm long-term, reducing turnover and fostering a stable, cohesive team.
3. Fostering Innovation
A supportive environment encourages employees to take risks and think creatively.
Knowing that their leaders have their backs makes them more likely to propose innovative solutions and contribute to the firm’s growth and success.
4. Personal and Professional Growth
Helping employees succeed means investing in their personal and professional development.
This not only benefits the individual but also enhances the overall capabilities of the firm.
Providing growth opportunities ensures your team remains competitive and adaptable in a constantly evolving industry.

If so, here are some great ways to make it happen:
Active Listening
Take the time to listen to your employees’ concerns, ideas, and feedback.
Active listening shows that you value their input and are willing to make changes to support their success.
Provide Resources and Training
Ensure your employees can access the resources and training needed to excel.
This could include professional development courses, mentorship programs, or simply ensuring they have the right tools for the job.
Recognize and Reward Efforts
Regularly acknowledge and reward the hard work and achievements of your team.
Recognition can be a powerful motivator and reinforces the idea that their contributions are valued.
Create a Supportive Culture
Foster a culture of support and collaboration within your firm.
Encourage teamwork, open communication, and a willingness to help one another.
This creates a positive work environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
Lead by Example
Demonstrate the behaviors and attitudes you want to see in your team.
Show empathy, help, and be approachable.
Your actions set the tone for the entire organization.
By shifting our perspective and seeing ourselves as the help for our employees, we can create a more supportive, innovative, and successful work environment.
Ensuring employee success is not just about providing resources and training; it’s about building a culture of trust, empowerment, and mutual respect.
As leaders, it’s our responsibility to help our employees thrive.
Commit to this mindset shift and watch your teams—and your firms—reach new heights of success.
I pray this message resonates with you and your team. Please let me know if you have any specific points you’d like to add or any questions.
Super Lawyers Designation: Part 1
by Marc Apple
Are you wondering what it will take to make your practice stand out from the crowd?
Doing great work on behalf of your clients can certainly help grow your law firm. However, satisfied clients need more than word of mouth to prosper.
You’ve chosen a profession where reputation and client trust are critical, so being recognized as a top attorney can make all the difference in the world.
TL:DR Super Lawyers is a rating service recognizing outstanding lawyers across over 70 practice areas. The selection process involves peer nominations, independent research evaluating 12 indicators (like verdicts, settlements, honors, and pro bono work), and a review by a blue ribbon panel. This rigorous process ensures that only the top attorneys are listed.
What is Super Lawyers?
Super Lawyers is a rating service that aims to identify top attorneys across a wide range of practice areas. But in a profession where reputation and credibility are so important, is a Super Lawyers designation worth your time?
Whether you’re a solo practitioner weighing the benefits of individual recognition or a large firm considering a broader marketing strategy, you should gain a deeper understanding of Super Lawyers to determine whether it’s worth pursuing.
Super Lawyers identifies and honors outstanding lawyers from over 70 practice areas who have achieved high peer recognition and professional accomplishment. The service is intended to provide a credible and comprehensive listing of exceptional attorneys to be used as a resource for lawyers and consumers searching for legal counsel.
Benefits of Being a Super Lawyer
As you will read below, the process of being nominated, let alone selected, is incredibly rigorous. So, why bother? Is it really worth jumping through all those hoops? Simply put, yes!
Enhanced Credibility and Prestige
One of the primary benefits is the enhanced credibility and prestige that comes with being recognized as a Super Lawyer. This distinction sets lawyers apart from their peers, signaling to potential clients and colleagues that they are among the best in their field.
Increased Visibility and Exposure
Super Lawyers can also raise an attorney’s profile. The listings are published in Super Lawyers Magazine and other affiliated publications, widely read by consumers and legal professionals alike. This exposure can lead to more client inquiries, higher referral rates, and opportunities for media coverage, all of which can contribute to a law firm’s growth.
Networking Opportunities
Being part of the Super Lawyers community opens up valuable networking opportunities. Lawyers can connect with other top-rated attorneys, fostering relationships leading to collaborations, referrals, and professional support. Networking with peers committed to excellence can also lead to personal and professional growth.
Promotional Advantages
Super Lawyers also offers marketing and promotional advantages. Attorneys listed on Super Lawyers can use the Super Lawyers badge on their websites, business cards, and other marketing materials.
This recognition can enhance a law firm’s branding and attract more clients.
It Builds Trust
No matter what industry you’re in, displaying independent third-party badges on your website can go a long way toward building trust with prospective clients. According to a survey by Helplama, 76% of consumers said that trust logos affected their sense of trust in the website they were browsing.
A Super Lawyer designation helps establish that all-important trust, reassuring potential clients of an attorney’s competence and success. When someone sees the Super Lawyer designation on your website, they’ll feel more confident that they are making the right choice, leading to the potential for increased client acquisition.
How Does Super Lawyers Work?
Super Lawyers uses a multi-phase process to identify and recognize the top attorneys in the country. They achieve this goal by using a rigorous, patented selection process that involves peer nominations, independent research, and evaluations by a blue-ribbon panel.
Nominations
The annual selection process begins with peer nominations. Lawyers are encouraged to nominate other attorneys they’ve seen in action, whether as opposing counsel, co-counsel, or through other professional interactions.
These nominations carry significant weight since they come from knowledgeable insiders within the legal community who can vouch for the nominee’s abilities and professionalism.
While a lawyer can nominate someone else in their firm, it must be matched by at least one nomination outside the firm.
Finally, no attorney can nominate themselves, and no campaigning or solicitations for votes are allowed.
Independent Research
Following the peer nomination phase, Super Lawyers’ attorney-led team conducts independent research on each nominee.
