FOLLOWING THROUGH
By Phyllis Sisenwine, MCC, The Lawyers Coach
In their book, Following Through: A Revolutionary New Model for Finishing Whatever You Start, Steve Levinson and Pete C. Greider delve into the common struggle of failing to complete tasks despite good intentions.
They argue that this issue isn’t merely due to a lack of willpower or motivation but is rooted in how humans are wired compared to animals like squirrels, which instinctively follow through on tasks such as collecting acorns.
Humans operate with two distinct guidance systems: the Intelligence Based Guidance System, which plans and sets intentions, and the Primitive Guidance System, which reacts to immediate stimuli.
The conflict arises because our primitive system prioritizes immediate gratification, whereas the intelligent system plans for long-term goals. This neurological mismatch explains why people often fail to follow through on commitments like regular exercise, business growth initiatives, or organizational tasks.
According to Levinson and Greider, unlike instinct-driven animals, the human nervous system isn’t naturally inclined toward consistent follow-through. This discrepancy causes individuals to prioritize short-term rewards over long-term goals, resulting in procrastination, unmet promises, and heightened stress levels.
To address this challenge, Levinson and Greider propose practical strategies for improving follow-through. One notable strategy is Spotlighting, which involves deliberately setting up cues or reminders in one’s environment to maintain focus on desired actions. These cues function as spotlights that direct attention toward intended goals, helping to counteract the impulse to prioritize immediate desires.
Ultimately, the key takeaway from their work is that effective follow-through requires more than mere willpower; it necessitates creating supportive environments that facilitate desired behaviors while minimizing distractions. By aligning environmental cues with personal intentions and consistently reinforcing these reminders, individuals can enhance their ability to complete tasks and achieve personal, financial, and career objectives.
Harnessing Inner Wisdom for Business Growth
by Crystal Deichert, LMHC, LPC
Running a private practice is both rewarding and challenging. Whether you're a therapist or attorney, balancing client demands, business operations, and personal life can often feel overwhelming. However, one often overlooked resource that can guide you through these challenges is your own inner wisdom. By tapping into this inner compass, you can grow your business, avoid burnout, and foster long-term fulfillment.
Connecting with Your Inner Wisdom for Business Decisions
In a world filled with external influences—industry trends, client demands, and market changes—it’s easy to lose sight of your unique path. Many private practice professionals adopt strategies that don’t align with their values, leading to frustration. Connecting with your intuition allows you to make clearer, more confident business decisions that align with your true self.
Action Tip: Take a few moments each day to reflect and reconnect with your bigger purpose. Ask yourself: Am I making decisions that align with who I am and what I want to offer my clients? Trusting this inner voice helps you navigate uncertainty with greater clarity. Sometimes this requires letting go of “shoulds” and what others are doing—embrace your uniqueness, that’s what draws clients to you.
Balancing Growth and Personal Well-being
Many private practice professionals are prone to burnout, trying to grow their client base at the expense of personal time. Yet, sustainable growth happens when you prioritize well-being. A thriving practice requires a thriving practitioner.
Action Tip: Set aside non-negotiable time for activities that bring you joy—whether meditation, hiking, or family time. Recharging allows you to show up fully for your clients, and when you’re well-rested, your practice flows more smoothly.
The Long-Term Benefits of Inner Alignment
When you integrate inner wisdom into your practice, the benefits go beyond business success. You cultivate authenticity, foster deeper client relationships, and open yourself to new streams of abundance.
Action Tip: Invest in personal development—whether through coaching, retreats, or self-guided practices like Awaken Your True Potential. Set aside time each week to journal and reflect on insights that can apply to your business. Over time, this builds your confidence in making intuitive, aligned decisions that benefit both you and your practice.
Running a private practice is about more than just profit. It’s about creating a sustainable, meaningful life supporting personal and professional success. You can achieve both by connecting with your inner wisdom and prioritizing well-being.
