Why Every Lawyer Should Slide into Social Media
The Unseen Benefits of DMs for Client Acquisition
by Marc Apple, Founder of Forward Push
While you may not be thrilled with everyone who slides into your DMs…occasionally, you might be pleasantly surprised (and richly rewarded).
That’s often the case for lawyers on social media, especially on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
“But Marc, no one ever likes or comments on any law firm posts I see on those platforms.”
Without those thumbs up or hearts or whatevers, you might think spending billable hours on social media is a waste of time…or, if you hire it out…a waste of valuable marketing dollars.
I understand the pushback.
A lot of legal issues aren’t the sort of thing you want to inadvertently announce to your boss, your college roommate, your kid’s babysitter, or Aunt Thelma via a casual social signal.
People feel a lot more comfortable taking advantage of the DM aspect of social media platforms – especially when you’re an attorney who deals with sensitive or best-kept private issues.
Because we manage the social media feeds of several attorneys and their law firms, we know just how often highly qualified prospects slide into a law firm’s private DMs as a result of social media content.
Not on social media? You could be missing out on a lot of lead-generation opportunities.
Even without the upfront dopamine hit of lots of clicks and likes it’s still working…and the reality is, those are all vanity metrics anyway.
The only clicks that matter? The ones that result in actual cases.
Lawyers need to be on social media, and they need to consistently post engaging, scroll stopping content so potential clients feel confident reaching out.

Ashley’s Story
Ashley is a family law attorney in solo practice, specializing in taxation and estate planning.
She met Robert through his business lawyer. He was an ideal client for her because his wife had filed for divorce and he had a complex and precarious financial situation.
Ashley let him know what she could do for him at his initial free consultation. She would be supportive, hold his hand, explain every step of the legal process, keep him well-informed, and work to protect his assets.
She had given the same message to dozens of prospects in similar situations.
Robert did not hire her, which surprised Ashley.
She sought answers. I opened her mind to the power of words—Words that Sell with Style.
Robert was the prototype of an empire builder. Highly competitive, he wanted to amass wealth, bask in public recognition, wield power, and come out as Number One.
Hand-holding was for sissies.
Unintentionally, Ashley’s language had repelled him.
She discovered how to identify prospects like Robert going forward.
More importantly, she learned how to shift her communication to match his style.
Strengthened with this understanding, the next time Ashley consulted with someone like Robert, she articulated what she could do by saying: “We can win. You can come out on top. I can safeguard your financial position.”
She was hired on the spot.
If you’ve ever wondered why a client didn’t hire you, the answer may be because your styles were mismatched. You lacked AlikeAbility(SM).
What is AlikeAbility(™). It’s a skill that raises the perception, feelings, or thoughts within the other person that “You get me. We’re alike!”
How could this benefit you? When people feel or think that you’re like them, they relax. They feel comfortable with you, allowing trust to build rapidly.
Simultaneously, Alikeability reduces sales resistance.
People love to buy and they hate to be sold.
When trust is high and sales resistance is low, it opens the doors to doing business together.
Does Ashley use the same words with every potential client? No.
She adjusts what she says to suit her prospects. Most of her clientele respond best to her message of caring and support. Others thrive on hearing competitive language.
Today she chooses her communication to match the prospect. Her practice is thriving.
